Ces formes, issues de ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes naturels, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par le peuple comme les traces de transformations surnaturelles. Les f\u00e9es du monde enchant\u00e9, dont la localisation reste ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e, ne semblent pas, contrairement \u00e0 leurs homologues rustiques, attach\u00e9es \u00e0 une r\u00e9sidence souterraine. Lorsqu\u2019elles habitent une caverne, celle-ci est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement mentionn\u00e9e bri\u00e8vement, sans description d\u00e9taill\u00e9e. Il est \u00e9galement rare que la grotte et sa myst\u00e9rieuse occupante soient li\u00e9es par une relation forte. Une exception notable appara\u00eet dans un conte corse : une f\u00e9e d\u2019une grande beaut\u00e9, vivant \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 les b\u00eates parlaient et o\u00f9 les pierres marchaient, poss\u00e9dait d\u2019immenses pouvoirs magiques. Mais cette puissance avait une limite stricte : elle ne pouvait quitter sa grotte que pendant trois jours. Jadis, ils inspiraient une v\u00e9ritable peur aux enfants comme aux paysans, ce qui laisse penser qu\u2019avant de devenir des figures de contes, ils \u00e9taient associ\u00e9s \u00e0 des lieux r\u00e9els. Dans les r\u00e9cits gascons, les <strong>B\u00e9cuts<\/strong> sont d\u00e9crits comme des g\u00e9ants mesurant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sept toises de haut. \u00c0 l\u2019image des cyclopes \u2014 et rappelant fortement le mythe de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasiciliainrete.it\/fr\/culti-miti-e-leggende-dellantica-sicilia\/gli-eroi\/polifemo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Polyph\u00e8me<\/a> \u2014 ils ne poss\u00e8dent qu\u2019un seul \u0153il, plac\u00e9 au milieu du front. Ils vivent dans des cavernes, au c\u0153ur d\u2019un pays sauvage et sombre. Dans une version issue de l\u2019<strong>Albret<\/strong>, deux jumeaux entreprennent un voyage pour d\u00e9couvrir o\u00f9 finit le monde. Apr\u00e8s une longue errance, ils atteignent une vaste lande o\u00f9 un <strong>B\u00e9cut<\/strong> garde ses moutons. Le g\u00e9ant les contraint \u00e0 entrer dans sa grotte, qu\u2019il referme \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019une \u00e9norme pierre. Une fois \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, il s\u2019empare de l\u2019un des deux fr\u00e8res, le tue et le fait r\u00f4tir \u00e0 la broche. Lorsque le monstre, repu, s\u2019endort profond\u00e9ment, le survivant saisit sa chance : il lui enfonce la broche dans l\u2019\u0153il. Le prince, intrigu\u00e9, s\u2019y engage \u00e0 son tour \u2014 mais au lieu du gibier, il d\u00e9couvre un homme aux dents longues comme la main. Ce personnage n\u2019est autre que le diable. Contre toute attente, celui-ci lui laisse la vie sauve, \u00e0 une condition : devenir son domestique. Il choisit alors de l\u2019encha\u00eener dans sa propre grotte, dont il scelle l\u2019entr\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019aide de lourdes pierres. Le captif y est condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 souffrir de la faim et de la soif jusqu\u2019au jugement dernier. Ces cavernes ne retiennent pas seulement des \u00eatres humains ou monstrueux : elles enferment aussi des cr\u00e9atures merveilleuses.
