Leur curiosit\u00e9 restait souvent limit\u00e9e aux <strong>particularit\u00e9s <\/strong>de leur environnement <strong>imm\u00e9diat <\/strong>: collines, vall\u00e9es, cours d\u2019eau ou rochers singuliers. <strong>Rares <\/strong>\u00e9taient ceux qui s\u2019<strong>interrogeaient <\/strong>sur l\u2019<strong>ensemble <\/strong>du <strong>globe, <\/strong>et encore moins sur sa place dans l\u2019univers. Ils restaient fid\u00e8les \u00e0 l\u2019antique croyance qui en faisait le <strong>pivot immobile de l\u2019univers<\/strong>. Quand on leur affirmait que la <strong>Terre <\/strong>n\u2019\u00e9tait en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 qu\u2019un <strong>minuscule <\/strong>point dans l\u2019immensit\u00e9, plus petit que de nombreuses \u00e9toiles, certains pensaient qu\u2019on se <strong>moquait <\/strong>d\u2019eux. L\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un globe tournant paraissait encore plus <strong>absurde <\/strong>: \u00ab Si c\u2019\u00e9tait vrai, il y aurait des hommes qui marcheraient la t\u00eate en bas \u00bb, disaient-ils.
